Free Nursery Places

Free places for 3 and 4 year olds

All 3 year old children are entitled to 15 free hours of education per week. This is a government incentive to ensure that all children aged 3 and 4 years of age have access to early years education before they go to Primary School.

When is my child eligible for the free place?
Your child will be entitled to these 15 hours in the term after his or her 3rd Birthday. Terms start in January, May and September.

Where can I use these free hours?
All child care providers who provide education and care for young children will provide a place for your child. This includes private day nurseries, preschools, playgroups, nursery classes in primary Schools.

How does the fifteen hours placement work?
Depending on where you decide to take your child, the hours over the week may vary. It may be that your child is offered a 3 hour session over 5 days a week, so Monday to Friday, 9-12 or 1-4 for example. It could also be over 2 days for 7.5 hours a day or alternatively over 3 days for 5 hours a day. It does depend on the availability of each child care provider.

Can I use my free hours at Clayhall Nursery?
Definitely yes! We will be more than happy to accommodate you and your child.

How do I apply for a free place?
You can apply by contacting your local nursery, play group, preschool or school directly. If you are not sure what provision there is in your area, you can ring FIND (Families Info Direct) on 0800 587 7500 and they can provide you with a list of provisions near you.

Is there any paperwork involved?
Yes, once you have been allocated a place for your child, there will be a parent contract for you to read and sign. This will be sent on to the Borough’s education department to show where your child is taking their free education.

Do I need to provide any documents?
Yes, you will need to show your child’s Birth certificate or Passport to provide proof of your child’s age.
